Experiencing the Thrill of Formula 1 in Melbourne

SWN | Travel Weekly | 21 March 2023

Sydney's hospitality landscape is changing, but only for the better. Just last week, the city's newest luxury hotel — Capella Sydney — opened its doors, breathing new life into the old brownstone Department of Education building. Next week, the neighbouring capital Melbourne welcomes Australia's biggest sporting event, the Formula 1 Rolex Australian Grand Prix. There's plenty of action happening on the track, and just as much happening off track, too.

For history buffs, we've got the heritage guide to London, pinpointing all the landmarks you're going to want to see next time you're there. On your way across, make a point of booking a flight with a Changi Airport layover — it's just been named the best airport in the world once again

Experience the thrill of Formula 1 in Melbourne, Australia

Bookended by races in Bahrain and Azerbaijan is the Formula 1 (F1) series’ single Australian race — the Formula 1 Rolex Australian Grand Prix™, held at Melbourne’s Albert Park from March 30th to April 2nd. The city has welcomed the GP for 26 years, but 2023 is the biggest year yet, with the F2 and F3 series debuting alongside F1 on the circuit.

Ultra-luxury Capella Sydney welcomes its first guests after a mammoth seven-year restoration project

Sitting in the heritage-listed Sandstone Precinct, just minutes from Circular Quay, the Sydney Harbour Bridge, and the Opera House, Capella occupies the old headquarters of the NSW Department of Education and Department of Agriculture. The building was handed over to Pontiac Land seven years ago to begin careful restorations and bring it into the modern era while still honouring its heritage-listed status.

Changi Airport continues its reign as the world's best airport

With attractions more commonly seen in a national park than a transport hub — including a butterfly garden and a 40-metre waterfall — it’s no surprise that Singapore’s Changi Airport has reclaimed its spot as the world’s best airport for the 12th time. It also took out Skytrax’s awards for the World’s Best Airport Dining, Best Airport for Leisure Amenities, and Best Airport in Asia.

Destination of the week

Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland

Cocooned by rocky cliff faces and towering mountain peaks is the quaint alpine village of Lauterbrunnen; it's quintessential Switzerland. When dusted with snow, it transforms into a whimsical winter wonderland, the kind you thought was only true in fairytales.

Explore the trough valley on skis, taking the many cross-country trails through the alpine meadows to one of the famed waterfalls. There are more than 72 of them in the municipality, the 300m Staubbach Falls and Trümmelbach Falls are some of the most famous. The slopes are a little further out of town at the nearby Mürren-Schilthorn and Wengen-Kleine ski fields. Visiting for apres ski or taking the cable car from Stechelberg to the top of Schilthorn Mountain is the perfect way to enjoy the mountain lifestyle at a slower pace.

After a long day of exploration, nothing sates the appetite like a traditional Swiss fondue — berner oberländer — at Weidstübli. The traditional timber-clad restaurant sits at the base of a picturesque waterfall and serves hearty Swiss fare.
