Destination of the week

Cebu, Philippines

You’ve seen plenty of pictures of the paradisical beaches and iridescent water of Cebu Island; on postcards, as screensavers, and in every ‘dreamy beach holiday’ listicle. While the mainland boasts plenty of such beaches, you’re missing out if you don’t take a boat across to explore the shore and sea of the smaller islands. Off Pescador Island is one of the region’s top dive sites, home to a rich marine ecosystem brimming with colourful corals and large shoals of reef fish. If you’re up for the thrills, head to Malapascua Island, where you can test your nerves on a dive with thresher sharks.

Cebu City is a change of pace, a bustling metropolis where Spanish and Filipino cultures meet. See it in the cuisine — try Filipino rice flour and coconut milk tamales — architecture, and clothing. Delve deeper into the country’s fascinating history under Spanish influence at the Spanish-built Fort San Pedro, a museum and ex-military defence structure. Then, head to Top’s Lookout to get a lay of the land. The surrounding rural landscapes are a stark contrast to the towers of the cityscape below.
